Hold on Tight in the Windy City: Best Things to Do in Chicago

by Gavin Darvell

Hello Chicago, are you about to blow me away!? Apologises for the pun, but it’s true, I, you, we all will be blown away after a visit to one of North America’s biggest cities and most visited cities. Not by the wind, although that may feature! No, by the ambience, the culinary scene, and attractions.

Chicago sits on the shores of Lake Michigan and is a city where the steely high-rise buildings give way to parks that hold world renowned festivals (Lollapalooza for example), and side streets that offer culinary delights locally sourced and from across the globe. Chicago is many things, and exploring its streets and attractions is a treat for both the senses and the stomach.

Let’s start our windy city adventure by looking at the key attractions before heading for the all-important culinary scene. Hold on tight, time to discover the best things to do in Chicago.

Touring around Chicago

If you are a lover of architecture, then Chicago is the city for you. You have the Willis Tower to the silver Pritzker Pavilion. Oh, and there’s Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House in all its stained-glass beauty to admire. Not forgetting to look out for the street art that pops up unnoticed. What you see, well, you’ll have to tell us. All that before we’ve even come to the attractions themselves!

There are many places of interest, and will include some of the following:

  • Art Institute of Chicago – continue your art fix in the vast gallery for impressionist works.
  • 360 Chicago – get those city views from up high at one of the many city’s skyscrapers.
  • Navy Pier – one of Chicago’s top attractions. You have Ferris wheels to enjoy and other exciting rides along the pier. Time for fun here.
  • Shedd Aquarium – enjoy the underwater world and all its beauty.
  • Wrigley Field – a field of dreams, well it’s among the oldest baseball fields in the US leagues and home to the Chicago Cubs. It’s like stepping back into America’s past.

With so much on offer, you’ll never be short of things to do. And having toured and explored, well, time to indulge in Chicago’s culinary scene.

A Gastronomic gem

Chicago’s culinary scene is second to none. From the breakfast delights, waffles, anyone? Enchiladas for lunch, to choosing one of the many restaurants on offer for dinner. That belt may need to be loosened! And that’s before you’ve even started looking at a range of global foods on offer. The delights of pizza and other Italian specialities, for example. The choice is top-notch, and never ending.

All in the music

I should mention the festival scene. Music plays a huge role in the city’s ambience, and it’s back story. There were once around 200 taking place in the area. This may have changed because of the times we live in, but there’s hope many will return. From Blues to rock, to stars of the stage. Your choices are wide ranging.

Chicago may be called the windy city, and you may need to bring your coat to keep the chill away, but this city delivers its attractions and activities unlike many other cities across the country. Hold on tight and enjoy the ride.
