A Weekend in Porto: Best Things to Do

by Gavin Darvell

There’s something special about Porto. Is it the ambience? The people who are friendly and easy-going? It’s attractions or the River Douro? Perhaps it’s the heritage, the shopping streets and wine lodges? The answer is simple really, it’s all of them! Porto is just a special place to visit, so let’s not worry about the why’s, let’s explore and you’ll soon discover why.

The city is in the northern regions of Portugal and is a gateway to the diverse region found beyond. It’s also of course, known for the port wine that is shipped across the world. Once here you’ll find that exploring the city unveils a wealth of culture and heritage, mixed with some stunning attractions.

Whether you are here for a day, a weekend or longer, let’s look at what you can do and sightsee in this city that’s divided by a river.

Porto - old porto houses

Looking around on Day 1

On first impressions you’ll find Porto to feel cobbled together, mismatched houses give you that impression, which is all part of the charm. Top tip; you’ll want to bring your camera. Let’s start by heading down to Cais da Ribeira. That’ll be the waterfront. You are at the River Duoro here and it’s the best place to wander around the colourful, awkward looking houses. Just stroll, lap it up and enjoy. It also means you’ll get a feel for the city and get the chance to take in some of the best views. Another option here is to take a cruise down the river, or if that doesn’t appeal, just sit for a while and soak up everything at the riverside.

You’ll also notice as you stroll around or cruise down the river, the bridges that span the river. Time to head head across to the other side, and if you feel the time is right, then why not sample the famous port? Well, a glass or two is a must. Head to Gaia, on the south side of the river, to find the port houses. If you’re unsure and prefer an alternative tour around the city, then a hop on hop off bus tour is a great option, see it all, especially if you are only here for a short time.

Climbing high on Day 2

Let’s head up high as we start day 2. You can’t miss the spire of Torre dos Clerigos. It’s a 249ft tower, and don’t expect a modern building to head up, this is all old staircases and narrow at that. At the top, you’ll get to see a great cityscape, so will be worth the trudge. You can then head down Avenida dos Aliados, Porto’s main avenue for some window shopping.

Then it’s onto Porto cathedral, dating back to the 12th century, along with the cathedral you have another magnificent view to enjoy at the top. Here you are close to Dom Luis I Bridge, so if you didn’t visit it yesterday, then do it today. Another great viewpoint too!

Are you a fan of the Harry Potter books/ films, then you’ll want to stop at Livraria Lello. Don’t take my word for, but you may be standing in front of one of the most stunning bookshops in the world. It’s neo-gothic style is said to have inspired JK Rowling. So legend goes! Just be aware that you have to buy a ticket to get into the shop, being its popularity has risen so high.

And you can always browse the shops, sit at cafes and let the Porto atmosphere envelope you.

And there is Porto, charming, colourful, and full of delightful surprises. It’s beauty found in the neighbourhoods, the views and its architecture. Time to try somewhere new. Then make it a weekend in Porto. You can’t go wrong.
